BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - SCRUMPTIOUS treats and thirst-quenching beverages were on the menu at yesterday’s (Mar. 16) Bake Sale hosted by members of a youth group in St. Peter’s called Uptown.
The event was held on Main Street, Lower Monkey Hill, in the vicinity of the Public Bath where the landmark Poinciana tree can be found.
It was held with the aim of raising funds for the beautification project they started a few months ago in that area.
Some of the goodies on sale yesterday included a variety of flavoured cakes, such as chocolate, fruit, plain, carrot and strawberry made from the actual fruits. Bread pudding, cheese and tuna sandwiches, as well as homemade fruit punch and manufactured bottled drinks were also on sale.
While business was being conducted, some individuals were seen playing dominoes and others simply ‘chilled’ as music blasted from a car’s sound system.
Notably, if one were to visit that area where the group started the beautification project in November 2012, one would notice that the creatively constructed palette fences, benches and DJ booth are now spruced up with a fresh coat of paint that has provided the village with an aesthetically pleasing ambiance.
SKNVibes gathered that popular entrepreneur Victor Williams of Williams Architectural had donated two five-gallon buckets of white paint to the group on Friday, February 22.
Three gallons of green paint were also donated by Carol Icilma Phipps-Gilbert, who is the mother of Uptown’s Public Relations Officer, Linvall Julius.
Uptown’s Secretary Naldo Rawlins informed this media house that the Bake Sale was aimed at raising funds to assist in other projects that the group has on the front burner.
The Bake Sale began shortly after 10:00 a.m. and by 2:00 p.m. almost all of the items were sold.
According to Rawlins, the event had a “nice turnout”.
He said residents of the community came together and donated all the items they had on sale.
Rawlins expressed thanks to all of the contributors, and in observance of the group making a name for itself whilst on a mission to better the community, he commented, “As you can see, we're progressing.”
Uptown is prudent about its financial accountability and has established account at the Royal Bank of Canada.
Senior member of Uptown, Marlon ‘Tony’ Davis informed SKNVibes that the group's next project would be a clean-up at The Glenn in Lower Monkey Hill, where there is an accumulation of garbage although there is a sign discouraging the dumping of waste.
He said that mission would be tackled after the group would have completed its beautification project which involves more painting and planting of trees in the area.
The Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, the Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas, who was in the St. Peter’s community late yesterday afternoon, took the opportunity to mingle with the Uptown members and supported the group’s fundraising effort.
