BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, March 18th, 2013 (CUOPM) – The governing St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party has a majority in the National Assembly to pass laws for the twin-island Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis.
During his weekly radio programme “Ask the Prime Minister” on Tuesday, Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, the Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas, reiterated that the 2013 Budget will come to the lawmaking body on April 9th and will be passed by lawmakers.
“We have said that the Budget must come first. If people believe that we have a Minority Government, we will show in Parliament on the 9th of April, that this is a (Labour) Government that can pass legislation - important legislation like the Budget and that is why this (Opposition) letter being written to the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association is really a waste of time as within the body of the letter it says we cannot pass fundamental laws,” Prime Minister Douglas told listeners.
“We can pass any law and we can win any debate in Parliament, because the Government of the Labour Administration is in fact a Majority Government,” said Prime Minister Douglas, pointing out to listeners: “We have ten members on our side.
Those on the other side are only 5 and even if the two Judas’s were to go over to their (Opposition) side naturally; 2 from 10 leaves 8 and 5 + 2 is 7…. so it is 8 (Government) against 7 (Opposition).
And those who are confused about the majority nature of my Government look at us in Parliament on the 9th of April when we debate the budget and will pass it with a majority of votes on the Government’s side,” said Prime Minister Douglas.
