Michael John Nero receives “Sigma Education Nation” Scholarship for school year 2011-2012

Mr. Michael John Nero
Press Release

My name is Michael John Nero. I am American by birth, but I grew up in the twin-island federation of St. Kitts and Nevis. I was baptized in an Anglican church, but I have identified with the Baptist way of praise. Through my church, I have participated in several community service projects, from street clean-ups to attempting to inspire despondent and impoverished youth to achieve their dreams. This experience in itself was in large part a contributor to my decision to join Phi Beta Sigma.

Although I honor and believe in all of the ideals of the Phi Beta Sigma fraternity, that feeling of selflessness and a higher purpose I felt whilst doing community service opened up my eyes to what I could do for Phi Beta Sigma fraternity, and in turn the surrounding communities.

Back in St. Kitts, I attended the Washington Archibald High School and received various awards for my performance in the regional CXC (Caribbean Examinations Council) exams. I also balanced running track with being a musician (playing the steel drums and the piano) and being an Honor student -- not an easy task, but a very rewarding one. I was also very involved as a high school student. I held office in a number of clubs and always found a way to turn out a very good academic performance. This dedication, in my humble opinion, has helped me to do the same in college.

I attend the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, where I am a Junior, majoring in Finance. Upon arriving here, I was hit with a culture shock as well as misgivings as to how to adjust. As an Honors student in the Walton College of Business, the work is very demanding and the competition can be cutthroat. But I continued to persevere and eventually was able to tap into my inner strength and my Kittitian upbringing. It has been quite a journey but I am elated that I am able to continue doing everything in earnest - the way a Sigma man should.
