Obama, Elected 44th President of United States
CHICAGO, Illinois- From humble beginnings in Hawaii, to the challenges of holding political office, Illinois senator Barack Obama overcame all odds and made history last night (Nov. 4) by becoming the first African-American President Elect in US history.

As word spread that Obama had defeated Republican presidential candidate, Arizona Senator John McCain, worldwide celebrations were reported through international media.

Delivering his victory speech before a crowd of roughly 240,000 diverse people in Chicago’s famous Grant Park, 47-year-old Obama tipped his hat to the American ‘melting pot’ that allowed him to be the next president of the US.

“If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible, who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time, who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer.

“It's the answer spoken by young and old, rich and poor, Democrat and Republican, black, white, Hispanic, Asian, Native American, gay, straight, disabled and not disabled. Americans who sent a message to the world that we have never been just a collection of individuals or a collection of red states and blue states.

“We are, and always will be, the United States of America,” Obama said, rousing deafening cheers from the gathered crowd.

Meanwhile in the Eastern Caribbean, news of Obama attaining his country’s highest office became known just after midnight—symbolizing the “new dawn” of US foreign policy referenced in his speech.   ~~Adz:Right~~

“To all those watching tonight from beyond our shores, from parliaments and palaces, to those who are huddled around radios in the forgotten corners of the world, our stories are singular, but our destiny is shared, and a new dawn of American leadership is at hand,” the President Elect said, promising an era of peace to follow the warring and aggressive foreign policy of the current administration.

While coming into the election the polls had shown Obama having a commanding lead in the race to the White House, many American liberals and persons around the world had skepticism about the candidate’s chances, particularly because of George W. Bush’s victories in 2000 and 2004.

That skepticism crumbled, however, as results from important battleground states began to pour in around 8:30 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. Voters in the key states of Pennsylvania, Ohio, Florida and the long standing Republican stronghold of Virginia all voted Obama, virtually sealing a victory for him and running mate Vice Presidential candidate Delaware Senator Joe Biden early in the night.

The electoral count for the race as of this morning was Obama-338 versus McCain’s 163, a landslide win in a race where only 270 electoral votes were required for either candidate. Ballots in Indiana, Missouri and North Carolina are still being counted as the race was very close in those states.

The Democrats credited record setting voter turnout and a “revitalized political system”, largely due to minority and youth voters, to their victory as Obama became only the 15th Democratic president and the fourth youngest in US history.

Obama will now enter a transition period in which he will meet with President Bush and countless other Washington advisors in preparation for his January 20, 2009 inauguration as the 44th President of the United States of America.
