Shame! Shame! Shame! On Honourable Myron V. Walwyn

-Government Minister brings more disgrace to the people and the House of Assembly with his continued nasty attack on media houses

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI   --  It is with great sadness that at the seventh sitting of the second session of the second House of Assembly held on April 8, 2013 Myron V. Walwyn, a Minister of Government in the National Democratic Party Administration, used his parliamentary privilege to yet again attack the media houses and inferred about the credibility of stories written by one news site.

While the Minister was clever not to call any names of any media houses, or in particular any online news site, it’s fair to conclude he was targeting his unprofessional and baseless hostility towards Virgin Islands News Online.

It is sad that the Minister for Education and Culture, Mr. Walwyn, will use the House of Assembly to campaign for re-election and start his tired, dull, boring, outdated attack on our news site. What another sad day for all Virgin Islanders, the integrity of the House of Assembly and our young democracy.

Over the past three years of operation, Virgin Islands News Online has, and if the Minister is honest with his conscience he will agree, cemented itself as solid, factual, creditable, accurate and only produces objective, fair and balanced reporting.

We can do this because we are not linked or controlled by any political parties or families and therefore, we will never use the site to go after anyone or carry out personal attacks, agenda or score settling.

This, we might add, is the basis of professional journalism and what all reporters and media organisations in the Virgin Islands should aspire to achieve.

We continue to take our role in building the Territory very serious and continue to promote social, racial, and religious harmony and have great respect and admiration for all those who have come to live among us.

The Minister for Education and Culture, Mr. Walwyn, is well aware of this superior record, but for his own selfish political desperation chose to suggest otherwise.

His attack in the House of Assembly, where he inferred to our news site, can only be regarded as disgusting, tasteless, lacking credibility and objectivity, and speaks volumes about him as a person and his character.

Others have asked whether he maybe fit to represent the people of the Virgin Islands and have also questioned his mental stability as a legislator.

In a time in our history when the banks are foreclosing and repossessing residents’ homes, cars and land, children are hungry in some schools, teachers and parents are shocked with the lack of basic resources at schools, and all sports coaches are crying out for help and support from his Ministry, he used his privileges and presence in the House of Assembly to waste time with petty and senseless items such as attacking the media.

Mr. Walwyn could better use his time striving to assist youths in finding meaningful employment, encouraging higher education and working to strengthen our social institutions.

May we be forward thinking in recommending that the elders in the House of Assembly sit him down and explain to him his role as a member of the House of Assembly from his constant embarrassment of himself and his own colleagues. You will note that no other legislator behaves in this childish and uncultured manner!

If his only objective is to get the attention of our esteemed founder Julian Willock, then we humbly and politely suggest that he not waste his time like a top spinning in the mud!

We could not close without continuing to thank our many readers, advertisers and our team of reporters from around the Virgin Islands and the Caribbean and also our media partners locally, regionally and internationally for the support, wise counsel and commitment to free speech, facts, and objectivity.
