Galatasaray v Real Madrid: Live Report

Real Madrid's Portuguese forward Cristiano Ronaldo (C) heads the ball during a training session on April 8, 2013 in Istanbul ahead of Wednesday's Champions League quarter-final second leg against Galatasaray at the Turk Telekom Arena. Real Madrid hold a 3
By: Nick Morrison

(28.94966, 41.01384) - AFP IS CLOSING THIS LIVE REPORT after Real Madrid survived a stirring second-half fightback by Galatasaray to qualify for the Champions League semi-finals for the third successive year with a 5-3 aggregate victory.

Already leading 3-0 from the first leg last week, it took Jose Mourinho's side just eight minutes to add to their advantage in Istanbul as Sami Khedira crossed for Cristiano Ronaldo to sweep the ball home from close range.

However, after Ronaldo had missed a gilt-edged chance to double his tally on the night, Galatasaray then produced an unlikely comeback after Emmanuel Eboue rifled in a equaliser from the edge of the area.

Wesley Sneijder and Didier Drogba added two goals in a minute to give the home supporters genuine belief their side could cause a huge upset.

Galatasaray threw men forward and coach Fatih Terim brought on striker Johan Elmander for Eboue in the search for the two more goals his side needed.

Real defender Alvaro Arbeloa then saw two quick-fire yellow cards a minute from time, but Ronaldo then sealed Madrid's path into the last four with another sweet strike in stoppage time -- his 49th in the Champions League taking him to fifth on the all-time list.

Real are nine-time European champions and Jose Mourinho's side are now one step closer to a fabled 10th title this season, 'La Décima' as it is known to their fans.

In the night's other game, Borussia Dortmund staged a remarkable last-ditch comeback against Malaga to join Real in the last four.

Malaga were leading 2-1 in the going into injury-time when Dortmund's Marco Reus gave his side a glimmer of hope with a 91st-minute equaliser, though the Spaniards would still have gone through on away goals.

But in the frantic closing seconds, Reus then managed to stab the ball across the Malaga goalmouth for Brazilian centre-back Felipe Santana to toe the ball over the line for the crucial third Dortmund goal.

Replays showed Santana may have been offisde but the goal stood and the Germans were through.

11 mins: Not only was that a terrible start for Fatih Terim's side but it could also kill the game as a spectacle as the hosts now need to score five to go through -- the whistles are already raining down from the stands in Istanbul.

8 mins: GOAL! Galatasaray 0 Real Madrid 1 (0-4 on aggregate)

Cristiano Ronaldo scores from Sami Khedira's low cross from the right -- the worse possible start for the hosts.

Poor defending from Galatasaray as Ronaldo was able to ghost in at the near post to sidefoot home his 10th Champions League goal of the season.

3 mins: CHANCE! Early opening for Real Madrid as a loose ball is chased by Gonzalo Higuain. Goalkeeper Fernando Muslera races out and gets to it first but sends it straight to Angel Di Maria. The Argentine fires it goalwards but Muslera gets a boot to it, deflecting it past a post.

1848 GMT: KICK-OFF - Galatasaray get the game under way amid a raucous atmosphere in Istanbul.

1840 GMT: Tonight's game is being played at the multi-purpose Turk Telecom Arena, which replaced the Ali Sami Yen Stadium as Galatasaray's home two years ago.

The club's old stadium was nicknamed "Hell" by Galatasaray's supporters because of its notoriously intimidating atmosphere created by enthusiastic support, with flares, smoke and drums common features -- the club's fans may have to stir up some of that passion to get past Madrid tonight.

1830 GMT: Team news just in -- Galatasaray boss Fatih Terim has made just two enforced changes as his side look to overturn a 3-0 first-leg deficit.

Cameroonian defender Dany Nounkeu and top-scorer Burak Yilmaz are suspended so Gokhan Zan comes into the backline, whilst Umut Bulut partners Dider Drogba in attack.

Madrid, meanwhile, have made three changes from the first leg as the suspended duo of defender Sergio Ramos and midfielder Xabi Alsonso are replaced by Pepe and Luka Modric.

And up front Gonzalo Higuain is rewarded for his starring role in the 5-1 win over Levante at the weekend as he replaces Karim Benzema and captains Los Blancos.

Starting line-ups in the Champions League quarter-final, second leg:

    Galatasaray (4-3-1-2):

Fernando Muslera; Emmanuel Eboue, Gokhan Zan, Semih Kaya, Albert Riera; Hamit Altintop, Selcuk Inan (capt), Felipe Melo; Wesley Sneijder; Umut Bulut, Didier Drogba

    Coach: Fatih Terim

    Referee: Stephane Lannoy (FRA)

1825 GMT: Tonight's game will be Mesut Ozil's first in Turkey, it's being reported -- the Real Madrid midfielder is a second generation German (his grandparents are Turkish but parents were born in Germany).

He could have played for the Turkish national side but opted to represent Germany so it'll be interesting to see what reaction he gets from the fans in Istanbul.

1812 GMT: Here are the starting line-ups for tonight's other Champions League quarter-final, second leg between Borussia Dortmund and Malaga at Signal Iduna Park:

    Referee: Craig Thomson (SCO)

1805 GMT: Along with their 3-0 deficit from the first leg, Galatasaray also have manage without their star striker Burak Yilmaz tonight.

The Turkish frontman has eight goals in this season's Champions League but is suspended after being booked for diving in the first leg, a decision that TV replays showed was pretty harsh.

WELCOME TO AFP'S LIVE REPORT on the second leg of the Champions League quarter-final between Real Madrid and Turkish giants Galatasaray at the Turk Telecom Arena in Istanbul.

Jose Mourinho's Real side hold a commanding 3-0 lead from the first leg at the Santiago Bernabeu last Wednesday.

Goals from Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and Gonzalo Higuain have put the Spanish champions within touching distance of their third consecutive semi-final in Europe's premier club competition, but goalkeeper Diego Lopez insists they have to maintain their attacking instinct for the second leg.

"It is obvious that 3-0 is a very good result for us," he told the club's website. "But I think the key will be to score a goal there and then that will practically put us through.

"Our mentality has to be to go there and score. To rely on the 3-0 would be an error."

But several high street bookmakers in Britain have Real Madrid 500/1 on to go through tonight, illustrating the size of the task facing Fatih Terim's side.

In tonight's other Champions League game Spanish side Malaga travel to Borussia Dortmund having held the German side to a goalless draw in last Wednesday's first leg.

Kick-off in both games is less than an hour away at 1845 GMT (1945 BST) so stay with us for all the action as it unfolds in Istanbul and for goal updates from the Signal Iduna Park in Dortmund.
