If Hilary and Michelle can do it...why can’t Jean?

By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – GOVERNMENT Backbencher the Hon. Sam T. Condor has lashed back at his former Cabinet colleagues who claimed that rather than making his own decisions, his wife does that for him after he would have consulted with her.

On Tuesday (Apr. 9), while at a press conference held by the six elected Parliamentarians who boycotted that day’s Budget Presentation, Condor, in responding to a question posed by a media operative, spoke of the wives of specific world leaders who have been applauded for the supportive role they have played and are playing.

Condon questioned why a double standard is being held by his former colleagues about supportive wives.

“It is alright…it is nice for the Prime Minister to talk about President Obama and his wife. That’s a good thing; how supportive President Obama’s wife is to him and all of that…But Sam Condor can’t have a supportive, independent wife. It’s good in America but not in St. Kitts. They laud Hilary Clinton and they laud Michelle Obama for their brilliance and their independence and their charisma and all of that.

“But let me tell you something…this is my view and I am sticking to this. Jean is one of the most able woman in the Labour Party and I am saying that modestly. Ask people who want to talk the truth, ask all the Ministers of Government, ask Timothy, ask Dwyer, ask all those other Ministers who Jean pulled up, led around…”

The former Deputy Prime Minister in the Denzil Douglas-led administration explained that being the family man that he is, his wife, son and two daughters constitute part of his “political outfit” from which he takes advice.

“What is the problem with these people? Why these people don’t just grow up and get mature and raise the level of debate? I am proud, extremely proud of the support and the assistance I get from my wife...not only my wife but from my family…”

The Constituency Three Parliamentary Representative also countered suggestions that he is unfit for leadership.

“I am a family man and I am extremely proud of the relationship with my family. I depend on them! There is no problem about making a decision for me. All my life I have shown and demonstrated the leadership from a schoolboy…”

Condor said he had served in numerous leadership capacities including Captain of the National Football Team, Coach and Assistant Coach of that team, and the first Youth Coordinator of the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party.

Notwithstanding, Condor maintains that he does not hanker for a position of leadership but understands the dynamics of service and desires to serve in whatever capacity he has to.
