Basseterre, St. Kitts, April 12th, 2013 (SKNIS)  --  Twenty-five children were given an opportunity to stimulate their passion for reading during a two-week Easter Read-a-thon at the Charles A. Halbert Public Library.

Seven to 12 year-olds were invited to the public library during the school Easter break to read as many books as they could from a possible 300 books.

The readers were then questioned based on what they read. Participants also had an opportunity to win the read-a-thon trophy and other prizes. Books stationary, student engraved in the read a-thon plaque

Carmen Blanchard-Browne, Assistant Librarian, explained the aim of the exercise.

“The goals of the programme are to create in children a passion and habit for reading and to keep avid readers “booked” and get others hooked on reading.”

She further explained that the programme is rewarding for both children and parents.

Nine-year-old participant and avid reader Salana shared her enthusiasm for reading.

“I’m here because I like reading,” she said. “I like reading because it is fun and it takes me to places imaginable. When I’m bored I just grab a book and read, read, read, read.”

Sponsors for the programme included the Rotary Club of Liamuiga, St. Kitts and Nevis National Bank, First Caribbean International Bank, TDC and Harpers.
