BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – TRAFFIC came to a standstill today (Nov. 6) near Keys Ghaut, when a vehicle overturned after colliding with a car in the vicinity of the upper level of Keys Housing Project.

The accident, which occurred at about 12:15 p.m., involved a BMW (R339), rented by Windsor University student Sandeep Rangineni and a government owned minivan (PA1467) driven by Gretchson Powell of St. Peter’s.

According to Rangineni, he was driving from Basseterre towards the Windsor University campus in Ottley’s when he stopped behind a bus (H7996) that was unloading passengers.

He further stated that while waiting for the bus to move off, Powell came around the corner at a high speed, lost control of his van, grazed the bus and collided with the car he was driving.

The force of the collision caused R339 to be pushed back by about 15 feet while PA1467 overturned several feet away.

Powell and his passenger were able to extricate themselves unaided from the vehicle. He sustained no injuries from the accident; however, his passenger, who is currently unidentified, suffered a crushed hand and a split arm and was taken to the Joseph N France General Hospital by a unit of the Emergency Medical Services.

Rangineni was uninjured but his passenger, Walton Yeboah-Amoako, suffered a cut to and slight swelling on his face.

Powell stated that he could not clearly remember the details of the incident as he “blacked out once [he] turned the corner”, but maintained he was not driving at a high speed, although a police official told SKNVibes that the van must have been travelling at a high speed in order to hit the car with such force and overturn.

The full extent of the damage to both vehicles is unknown, although it was observed that there was some degree of damage to the right front fender and the right exterior of the car, while the windshield, right front fender, bumper and indicator of Powell’s van were damaged and the bus’ right rear view mirror was destroyed.
