Security Forces bus slams into wall at Sandy Point

By: Precious Mills, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – TRAFFIC along the Island’s Main Road in Sandy Point was temporarily disrupted yesterday afternoon (Apr. 19) following an accident involving a bus that belongs to the Federation’s Security Forces.

The vehicle, which had slammed into a wall along the Island’s Main Road, was extensively damaged and a photograph sent to this media house showed the image of an individual who appeared to have been trapped in the wreckage.

SKNVibes had arrived on the scene at 4:04 p.m. and found that the road at the foot of the southern end of the Sandy Point Recreation Grounds was used to divert the flow of traffic because the area where the accident took place was impassable at the time.

Shortly after the incident this media house contacted the Police Press and Public Relations Officer, Inspector Lyndon David, who confirmed that the bus was indeed one of the vehicles used by the Security Forces but was unable to provide details on what had caused the accident.

However, a release from the Traffic Department this morning (Apr. 20) states that members of that department are currently investigating the incident.

It noted that the accident occurred at about 3:45 p.m. in the vicinity of Laplace residence and had involved government-owned motor van P4000 which was being driven by Derrick Fyfield of Camp Springfield.

“Investigation revealed that the van was travelling from Brimstone along the Island Main Road and when the driver reach in the vicinity of the Laplace residence overtook a moving vehicle that was travelling in same direction. As it attempted to get back on it lane to avoid an oncoming vehicle, the left front wheel of the van impact on the sidewalk, the driver then lost control of the vehicle and collided to a wall fence on the seaside of the road and it turned over on the right side,” the release said.

It also said that, in addition to the driver, there were six passengers in the van and all of them were transported to to the JNF Hospital where they were treated and discharged.
