L-R: Antigua PM Spencer Baldwin and US president George W. Bush

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua – Following the history-making election of Barack Obama as the first African-American in US history to be elected to the presidential office, Prime Minister of Antigua-Barbuda Hon. Baldwin Spencer offered congratulatory remarks and offered long-lasting tributes to the President Elect, not all of which sat well with the populace.

PM Spencer, who currently serves as Chairman of the Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community, noted that he is conscious of the promise of Obama’s presidency in shaping a new paradigm in America’s relationship with the other nations of the world. He added that the new President’s plans for change are bound to transform not only America but also the rest of the world.

Spencer stressed that the message of change of the Illinois senator would ignite hope and action in people of many countries that might still be passive in the face of inadequacies and injustice.

In offering a lasting tribute to Obama, Spencer announced less than 24 hours after the election results were declared, that he “shall take immediate measures for Antigua and Barbuda’s highest mountain peak [Boggy Peak] to be dedicated in your honour and renamed Mount Obama”.

The decision was not well received by many Antiguans as reports reaching this media house indicate that some thought that the move came too soon as Obama has yet to be sworn in as President of the US.

One disgruntled Antiguan claimed, “I appreciate what Obama’s victory signifies for Blacks everywhere; it is indeed a great milestone. But, what about our National Heroes, founding fathers, pioneers and great leaders who rendered their service to ensure that we build upon a firm foundation? What has Obama done to directly help this country?

“Boggy Peak is a historical landmark; this is not just any piece of hill! And now, our history will be removed to teach our children of some American who has played no role in the early stages of development of this beautiful country.”

SKNVibes however learned that Spencer’s decision must be sanctioned by Cabinet before such action can be implemented.
