Navigating “Island” Parenting

By: Mutryce A. Williams

If only it was always cool as the breeze and calm as the seas!

    COMMIT TO YOUR CHILD

The raising of a child is like building a cathedral. You can’t cut corners. Dave Eggers

Enhance your parent-child relationship by focusing on the follow-ing essentials:

    • Love your child and praise them fre-quently so that they feel valued and wanted.

    • Set clear bounda-ries so that your child knows where they stand.

    • Provide them with clear routines and structure so that they feel safe and know what to expect.

    • Be consistent in your approach so that they learn the behav-ior well.

    • Reward your child for being good, trying hard or doing well to build their self-esteem.

    •  Follow through with clear conse-quences if they misbe-have, so that they learn from their mis-takes.

    • Give them cuddles and affection at every opportunity so that they know they are loved.

If I had my child to raise all over again

If I had my child to raise all over again, I'd build self-esteem first, and the house later. I'd finger-paint more, and point the finger less. I would do less correcting and more connecting.

I'd take my eyes off my watch, and watch with my eyes.

I'd take more hikes and fly more kites. I'd stop playing seri-ous, and seriously play. I would run through more fields and gaze at more stars. I'd do more hugging and less tugging.

    ~Diane Loomans

    The Glory of Parenthood
Parents are so busy with the physical rearing of chil-dren that they miss the glory of parenthood, just as the grandeur of trees is lost when raking leaves.

    PARENTING QUOTES

In bringing up children, spend on them half as much money and twice as much time. ~Author Unknown

“To be in your children’s memories tomorrow, you have to be in their lives to-day” - Anonymous

“Kids spell love T-I-M-E.” – John Crudele

“The best inheritance a par-ent can give his children is a few minutes of his time each day.” O. A. Battista

    Listen to the Flight Attendant!
Are you this mom? Are you burning the candle at both ends? 1. Listen to the flight attendant: The first rule here is just to be aware that if you are at this point in your life where you are hanging on by a thread, do what every good flight attendant suggests in the event of cabin pressure failure:

"Put the Oxygen Mask on yourself first. Taking care of yourself means doing what you need to do to stay healthy. Eat well, take time for yourself, exercise, meditate etc… Imagine what your family would do with-out you?

If you are not taking care of yourself, you may continue down the road to sickness due to stress. So first things first –You are first!
