Delvin Wilkinson freed of murder charge

The late Chantelica Thompson and the freed Delvin Wilkinson
By: Jenise Ferlance, SKNVibes

CHARLESTOWN, Nevis - DELVIN WILKINSON, the man who was charged with the November 2, 2010 killing of his girlfriend and mother of his child, Chantelica Thompson, was freed by the Nevis Circuit Court this morning (Apr. 23) following the granting of a No Case Submission.

Wilkinson's trial began yesterday with the prosecution team calling 12 witnesses to give evidence on the State's behalf.

Wilkinson was represented by Hesketh Benjamin and Dr. Henry Browne QC, and SKNVibes understands that the attorneys did not cross examine any of the State witnesses.

This media house also understands that one of the witnesses, Pathologist Dr. Stephen Jones, did not appear to testify this morning as was scheduled, but his deposition was read into evidence.

The prosecution then rested its case after which the defence, in the absence of the jury, made a No Case Submission.

Dr. Browne, in his argument, told the Court that the prosecution did not present any evidence to prove that Wilkinson committed the act.

He said that with the lack of evidence, it would only leave the jury to speculate on whether or not he actually did the crime.

His Lordship Justice John Benjamin agreed and told the prosecution team that it would not do justice to put the case before the jury and leave them to speculate, as there was indeed no evidence to prove that the then-accused, Wilkinson, committed the crime.

The jury then returned and, upon direction of the Court, was ordered to deliver a not guilty verdict and Wilkinson was set free.

On November 2, 2010, Wilkinson had claimed to have found the fully-clothed, motionless body of his child's mother in a pool of blood in their Pond Hill home. He then ran to a neighbouring house from where an occupant called the police and notified them of the incident.

An autopsy performed on the body of the 19-year-old revealed that death was due to haemorrhage and shock as a result of stab wounds to the chest and head.

He was arrested and charged with murder on November 5, 2010.
