Charlestown Nevis (June 2, 2005) -- The Ministry of Physical Planning, Infrastructural Development, Communications, Works, Public Utilities and Posts has purchased two multipurpose equipments, a backhoe and a deck mower, for use by the Public Works Department.
The two pieces of equipment valued at over US$130,000.00 were commissioned Thursday by the minister, the Hon Mr A. Michael Perkins, and handed over to the Director of Public Works, Mr Denzil Stanley, at a function held on the Island Main Road at the junction with the Charlestown Bypass Road at Pinneys.
The Ministry of Psychical Planning, and by extension the Administration, continues to seek ways of enhancing the overall beauty of the island by equipping the Public Works Department with the tools to carry out its maintenance and road construction work throughout Nevis, said Mr Perkins.
He commented that the workload of the Public Works Department is ever increasing and the Administration finds it important to do the things that would help in the enhancement of the overall beauty of the island.
So it is indeed a pleasure for us to commission these pieces of equipment this morning and the Administration, and I am sure all the people of Nevis, look forward to the continued good and productive work of the Public Works Department, observed Mr Perkins.
Also present at the ceremony was the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Mr Ernie Stapleton, who said that the two pieces of equipment would reduce costs in the sense that the ministry would not have to hire private backhoes as much as it used to in terms of doing work with regard to the environment on Nevis.
In addition, went on Mr Stapleton, I think they come at a good time just at the beginning of the hurricane season so that we have two pieces of equipment that I believe can be used in any case of an emergency with regard to any disaster or anything that could happen on the island of Nevis.
Director of Public Works, Mr Denzil Stanley, while thanking Mr Perkins for helping his department to procure the equipment said that the workload for the department has been ever increasing and noted that the new equipment would help them to carry out the demands given to them in terms of the road works and the maintenance works on island.
He added: In the not too distant future we will be receiving another vital piece of equipment, a rubber-wheel roller, which will assist us greatly in the asphalting of road works the department has been doing.
