Labour Party’s ‘Full Confidence’ meeting attracts hundreds in Sandy Point

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – SANDY POINT came alive on Thursday night (Apr. 25) when the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party train rolled through the town and paused at Cleverly Hill, where a large and lively public meeting was held.

With the usual ‘FULL CONFIDENCE’ billboard aback the podium, Deputy Prime Minister Earl Asim Martin brought a start to the meeting prepping the crowd for each of the four ensuing main speakers.

Cedric Liburd – former Parliamentary Representative for St. Christopher Eight  - threw his full support behind the Labour Party candidate for St. Christopher Five – Norgen Wilson – and urged the supporters to do likewise and elect a man who would work feverishly to ensure that the projects which are needed in that constituency would be tackled.

The SKNLP’s darling, Minister Marcella Liburd followed sharply behind Liburd and cemented his comments.

Liburd gave much food for thought when she suggested that the current MP, the People’s Action Movement’s (PAM) and head of the organisation, Shawn K. Richards is unfit for leadership. She sought to prove her point by informing the huge crowd – which swelled to hundreds as the evening progressed – that since he took command of the PAM ship he has not made a single policy statement and that he has been known to “boycott” or abandon his fellowmen or his duties during critical moments.

She suggested that when he and government Backbencher and MP for St. Christopher Three the Hon. Sam Condor initiated court action against the Attorney General et al only months ago, Richards was off to Trinidad in a bout of merriment while Condor was left to face the Court alone.

In the midst of her presentation, Leader of the SKNLP Prime Minister the Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas arrived, and in a show of love, support, appreciation and excitement, his cheering supporters surrounded him as he made his way to the stage.

Fresh face on the Labour platform Delonte Lewis, who briefly spoke to the developments currently taking place in St. Christopher and Nevis, addressed the issue of full confidence, praised Dr. Douglas for his leadership, commended his team for their sterling work and indicated that St. Christopher Five would return to the Labour camp.

With The Soca Boys’ ‘Follow the Leader’ pumping through the sound system, Lewis issued a clarion call for persons to follow and support the Labour candidate of each constituency. And the crowd – in obvious support of his call – erupted in cheers of excitement.

And the stage was set for the man of the hour, the Labour hopeful candidate for that area, Dr. Wilson.

Confidently, he took the stage and not only did he highlight the shortcomings of the current MP and the party he leads, but he also educated his constituents about portions of the plan he and his party would execute for them if he were selected as their MP.

He proclaimed, assuredly, that he is the better option for the people of Sandy Point and encouraged the constituents to place their ‘X’ next to his name on polling day.

The hype and excitement was at its peak when Dr. Douglas took to the stage.

Dr. Douglas’ presentation focussed predominantly on MP Richards and his undeniable failure in properly representing the people of St. Christopher Five.

According to the PM, he is not angered with Sandy Pointers for placing their confidence in Richards. And he proceeded to outline a number of issues – which according to him and the information he gathered – makes Richards unfit to handle the affairs of that constituency.

He reiterated his party’s commitment to the people of Sandy Point and promised a number of projects – including the re-fencing of the ball court, improvement of the community library, commencement of the construction of a housing project for the Fig Tree community and the reconstruction of the community centre for that area.
