Social Development sets new Date for Parenting Seminar

Chief Social Development Officer Mrs. Annie Malone-Frett

Roadtown, Tortola - Government’s Social Development Department has announced new arrangements for the hosting of a Parenting Enrichment Seminar that was postponed due to the passage of Hurricane Omar last month.

Chief Social Development Officer Mrs. Annie Malone-Frett told the Department of Information and Public Relations that the seminar will now take place on Tuesday, 25 November.

“Several parents were interested in attending the seminar, which was initially scheduled for October 16.

However, we were unable to accommodate them due to the disruptions caused by Hurricane Omar. We are hoping for a very good attendance now that we have confirmed the new date for the seminar,” said the Chief Social Development Officer.

This month’s Parenting Enrichment Seminar is entitled ‘Working with Your Child’s School,’ and will be held at the Road Town Senior Citizens Building from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. Ms. Laurel Freeman of the Family and Children Services Division said the Social Development Department will offer onsite child care services to enable parents with infants and toddlers to attend the seminar, which promises to impart practical parenting tips.    ~~Adz:Right~~

“The seminar is part of our ongoing outreach to parents in the Territory. We have held similar events in the past and some parents were unable to attend because of difficulties with finding a babysitter. It is hoped that our onsite childcare services will inspire a greater number of mothers and fathers to attend this month’s seminar,” she said.

The Social Development Department functions under the Ministry of Health and Social Development. Its duties include community development, elderly services, disability and rehabilitative services, probation services, and family and children services.  The Department also offers mediation services, parenting seminars, job placement, meals on wheels and early intervention services.
