BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – CELVIN ‘CG’ WALWYN has emphatically stated that money is not the object for him accepting the position of Commissioner of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force (RSNPF), but rather to serve the country of his birth.
In an exclusive interview on Monday (May 6), SKNVibes asked Commissioner Walwyn if his three-year contract with the government could be terminated should the ruling St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party lose the seemingly imminent General Election before its maturity.
“Yes…that is the choice that they have, but I have no problem with it. Remember, I am here because I want to be, I don’t have to be in St. Kitts. I have four job offers on the table right now. If I had wanted to leave St. Kitts, last Friday (May 3) I could have left for a job three times what they are paying me here. I have some people coming in here next week offering me five times what I am making here. So money is not the object for me…this is my country,” was his response.
The Top Cop said he was born on “Burt Street right outside my office window. So I am here because I want to be here”.
Speaking to his educational background and work experience in the field of law enforcement, the Commissioner declared that the government could not afford to pay him for what he is worth.
“I am doing this because I want to. So, anybody who wants me to leave, I’ll be happy to do so if they win and they want me to go. But, for right now, I don’t deal with maybes,” he added.
Commissioner Walwyn also declared that he was employed by the Labour Administration to enforce the law and that he would diligently carry out his mandate under any political party that is in government.
“There is one government and I am employed by that government. I am employed as a law enforcer and I will enforce the law to the fullest extent regardless of who is in power.”
Walwyn had officially assumed command of the RSCNPF during the Passing of the Baton at the Warner Park Cricket Stadium on Wednesday, August 31, 2011; a ceremony that signalled the retirement of his predecessor Austin Williams.
While in his early teens, Walwyn had migrated to the US Virgin Islands and subsequently to the United States of America, where he pursued a career in law enforcement.
He has followed in the footsteps of his father, Zephaniah Joseph, who served in the Federation’s Police Force to the rank of Inspector.
Commissioner Walwyn came to the Federation with a wealth of knowledge under his belt.
He has held the positions of Deputy First Class in the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, Orlando, Florida; Deputy Sheriff, Harris County Sheriff’s Department, Houston, Texas; Interim Chief of Police, Kendleton Police Department, Kendleton, Texas and Surveillance Director at Equifax Services, Houston Texas.
Additionally, he holds a Criminal Justice Bachelor of Science degree, a Security Management Master of Science degree and was recently conferred with his PhD in Public Safety-Leadership.
