Jury finds Warrington Phillip guilty of murder

CHARLESTOWN, Nevis – AFTER deliberating for just over two hours, a six-male/six-female jury last evening found former Nevis and Leeward Islands spin bowler Warrington Phillip guilty of murdering his wife Shermel Phillip.
The 12-member jury retired at about 3:55 p.m., and on return to the courtroom at approximately 6:21 p.m. The jury's Foreman informed the trial judge, Her Ladyship Justice Ianthea Leigertwood-Octave, of its 11-1 guilty verdict which brought mixed reactions to those within the Nevis High Court and the scores of people on the outside.

evaluation and Monday, December 22 as his sentencing date.
Phillip was represented by Dr. Henry Browne, who, when asked by SKNVibes for a comment on the jury’s verdict, said, “The jury did its work and I did my work.”
From as early as three o’clock, scores of Nevisians had gathered outside the Nevis Circuit Court in Charlestown to get first-hand information of the jury’s decision.

At that time, a small crowd started milling into the Memorial Square and grew rapidly in numbers, including school children, towards the evening amidst tight security.
Phillip was arrested and charged on Tuesday, February 20, 2007 with the murder of his wife, Shermel Phillip, whose body was discovered by neighbours in her car with multiple injuries at her Brown Hill residence on Friday, February 16, 2007.
Some 26 witnesses testified in the case and the prosecution team was led by Barbadian Attorney-at-law Sir Richard Cheltenham, QC.
