BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE behaviour of certain politicians within the Federation while on the political platform has been the subject of discussions in recent times, with persons describing it as unsavoury and expressing concern about the negative impact it could have on the younger generation.

Specific mention was made of Prime Minister and Leader of the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party the Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas, who went to great lengths in making sexual innuendos and engaging in character assassination which are being described in some quarters as deplorable conduct.

At his press conference yesterday (May 15), Prime Minister Douglas was questioned by this publication to speak to his behaviour on the political platform.

The Prime Minister explained that his behaviour is dependent on the platform and environment within which he might be at a given time. And while being cognisant of the comments of others, and while he would somewhat tailor his presentations, Dr. Douglas indicated that his behaviour on the political platform would not change.

“I think that my behaviour is as expected on the political platform. When I’m on the platform, I am not here. I’m on the platform, totally different environment; the dynamics are different and so my presentations are also different.

“Would you criticise my presentation today? I’m sure not. But…I must say that in politics – as you say – naysayers find all kinds of distractions. One thing I would say is that I am mindful of people’s comments and criticisms, and if I have to tone it down I will tone it down, if that’s what people are saying I should do. Tone it down, tone it down, but not stop.”
