BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE top ranks of the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party Executive were late yesterday afternoon (May 19) selected unopposed at the party’s 81st Anniversary Convention.

Held at the Ballroom of the St. Kitts Marriott, conference delegates had the responsibility of lending their voices to matters that affect the party and, by extension, the country, as well as to decide upon which individuals they prefer to lead the organisation for the ensuing year.

Elected unopposed were National Leader the Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil Douglas, Deputy National Leader Hon. Dr. Earl Asim Martin, National Chairman Hon. Marcella Liburd, National Vice Chairman Hon. Nigel Carty, National Secretary Diana Williams-Humphrey, National Assistant Secretary Karen Crossman and National Treasurer Patrice Ward.

The three elected Members, as was indicated to this publication by Minister Carty, are Philmore Warner with 236 votes, Thamesha Fyfield who amassed 235 votes and Hazel Ross Robinson with 199 votes.

Sharylle Richardson, Rudolph Morton, George Dixon and Rubie Taylor were elected Designated Members to the National Committee for Constituencies One, Two, Five and Six respectively.

Carty hailed the Conference a success but explained that there was an unresolved matter concerning embattled former Ministers of Government, Hons. Dr. Timothy Harris and Sam Condor, which the conference resolved to deal with by the end of June 2013.

“Officially, they have not been thrown out. A number of persons raised that on the Conference floor, and what we did say is that we believe that the party would need to further address a number of issues with respect to the amendment of the constitution to properly deal with the procedural matters as it relates to disciplinary measures for members of the party…”

Carty explained that the SKNLP – having perused the Constitution of the Antigua Labour Party – believes that its constitution “needs to be more in line with what we see in the Antigua Labour Party’s to properly circumscribe matters to do with disciplinary actions with respect to members of the party.

“The Conference took a decision through a resolution that they would want between now and June 30 to review the matter and report back the findings so that we can perhaps reconvene a special conference to do a number of things; one of which would be to amend the part of the Constitution to give us a clearer way forward with respect to the disciplining of members.”
