BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – AN adult female is currently being treated at the Joseph N. France General Hospital for injuries sustained after being struck by a vehicle on Tuesday afternoon (May 21) in Basseterre.

Head of the Traffic Department Inspector Carl Caines told this media house that the accident took place at about 2:00 p.m. and had involved motorbus P2270 driven by Alrick Caines of Taylor’s Village and pedestrian Siddique Riley of Market Street.

Caines said the bus was reportedly travelling north along Adlam Street, and after turning onto South Independence Street “touched” Riley and she fell to the ground.

The Traffic Chief also said it was reported that Riley was making her way to the Meridian Medical Pharmacy after exiting Independence Square when she was struck.

She was transported to the hospital by a unit of the Emergency Medical Services.

An individual, who is in close contact with Riley, alleged that the bus driver “bore the stop”. But, when asked, Caines was unable to substantiate the allegation.

This media house was however informed that the vehicle had struck Riley to the head, which caused her to fall to the ground.

It was also informed that she is an employee of the People Empowerment Programme (PEP) and is attached to the Customs Department.

Riley is the mother of two teenage sons.

Inspector Caines is once again appealing to motorists and pedestrians to practice road safety at all times, since the “onus” lies with each individual.

He cautions that injuries sustained could be permanent and life-threatening.
