Ministry of Education Receives Books Valued at US $85,000

Basseterre, St. Kitts, May 23, 2013 (SKNIS): The Ministry of Education recently received a donation of eight pallets of recycled books and CDs valuing over US $85,000.00, to improve the quality of education in St. Kitts. 
 
During a handing over ceremony, at the Irishtown Primary School on Wednesday (May 22), Chief Education Officer Clarice Cotton noted that the donations were made possible by partnering with individuals who are dedicated to building bridges across island nations in the Caribbean and increasing literacy in the region.
 
“We realise that increased literacy will lead to more informed and more knowledgeable citizens,” explained Ms. Cotton. “It means we will have persons who can think critically and make informed decisions.”
 
The Chief Education Officer revealed that some of the books have already been distributed to the secondary schools and have provided valuable resources for the teachers. She added that they are also being used to provide additional information on topics in the syllabus.
 
Dr. Simon Jones-Hendrickson, Professor of Economics in UVI, expressed his delight that the schools have already benefited from the books and CDs. He also shared that the partners will continue their book donation projects.
 
 “There are more books!” he asserted. “I’m going to ensure that we get some more books so by bringing in individuals from the Department of Education in the Virgin Islands so that we can do a larger thing and perhaps also cover Nevis because there are more books to be distributed.” 
 
The initiative was a joint venture between Dr. Sarah Mahurt, Deputy Commissioner of Education of the USVI, Dr. Simon Jones-Hedrickson, the Fedricksted Twin City Lions Club, Dr. Valerie Comby, Sheryl Jeremiah-Ambrose, Timothy Gradison and Ferol Trucky.
