Student Council to have Elections next Friday
BASSETERRE St. Kitts - THE Student Council at the Beach Allen Primary School pumped up the volume on the usual school activities yesterday (May 24) by having the students ditch their uniforms and, with the help of their parents, turned out in their freakiest wear.
The day was dubbed Freaky Friday and it required the children to attend classes in anything but the ordinary.
Straight wigs, multi-coloured afros and odd socks and shoes were the order of the day as the students really dug deep and brought out their creative side.
Some wore clown suits, some donned masquerade gear and some were seen in tutus. Rompers over tights and spiky hair were also the order of the day.
One boy donned a Washington Archibald High School uniform complete with matching shoes and a wig, while another wore kitchen mitts on his hand and pompoms as hair.
There were also those dressed as grandmothers and grandfathers.
The creativity was endless!
The idea was the brainchild of the President of the Student Council, Tionzee Byron, who explained that she wanted to have a day when the students could kickback and have fun, a final 'hooray' right before they all have to do their Test of Standards.
Members of that body explained that as the outgoing Council, they also wanted to do something extra exciting for the students before Election Day when the students would elect a new Council.
They stated that the response was great as most of the children went "all out" for the event, which they said were expected because they knew their school mates had a high level of creativity in them.
Adding to the day's excitement was a Freakiest Competition comprising three categories - Freakiest Hairdo, Freakiest Outfit and Freakiest Dance - which all students had the opportunity to enter.
The paved sections of the school's compound were made into a stage and the competitors in each category were given the chance to display their hairstyles, attire and dance skills for all to see.
The students were judged by a panel of teachers.
The winners for each category would be announced on Monday (May 27) and prizes would be awarded to not only the winners, but all those who participated.
With regards to the Student Council, a teacher, Liaison Larissa Mars, elucidated that it was dormant for some time and became active during last school year.
She said that the Council changes every year right before final exams and the process mimics that of the General Elections with regards to the campaign.
Mars explained that there are three teams and each would have presidential debates and public meetings to explain what benefits would come to the students if their team is elected.
She further explained that the Elections Day would also mimic the Federal Elections in which each student had to register to vote. They were taught the proper manner in which to cast their votes.
Mars told this media house that on the morning of next Friday (May 31) each student would line up to cast their vote at one of two polling stations, adding that the process would be completed with the dipping of fingers in ink.
She explained that this is also a learning process for the students, as some of them are currently learning about Elections in their studies, noting that it is seen as an opportunity for them to add practical to theory.
Mars added that there are also Electoral Clerks who would tally the ballots, and an announcement of the winners for each polling station and the overall winner would be done in the afternoon.
