Traffic Court issues over $3 600 in fines

    BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – OVER the past two weeks the Traffic Court in Basseterre has been busy trying cases of motorists who were charged with traffic offences and a number of them were convicted.

     

    The traffic violators had appeared before His Worship Reginald Benjamin on May 16 and 23, 2013 at the Sir Lee Llewellyn Moore Judicial and Legal Complex.

    Elroy Henry of Lodge was convicted of using a cellular phone while in operation of a motor vehicle – committed on August 10, 2012 – and was fined $200 to be paid within seven days or spend one month at Her Majesty’s Prison.

    He was also convicted of failing to stop at a designated bus stop on December 7, 2012 and was fined $100 to be paid within 14 days or serve seven days in prison.

    Wayne Grant of Stone Fort, for failing to comply with traffic sign on December 21, 2012, was convicted and cautioned.

    Belle Vue resident Arland Belle has a $250 fine to pay, having been convicted of a July 28 2012 offence of driving off the bus route. He has 14 days from the conviction date to pay the fine or a one-month custodial sentence would be imposed by the Court.

    Lennis Dickenson of Challengers was fined $400 for committing a February 9, 2012 offence of driving without due care and attention. He has seven days from the conviction date to pay the fine or serve 14 days behind bars.

    Lodge Project resident Roysteen Wilkinson appeared before the Court on one count each of driving without insurance and driving without a valid driver’s licence. He was cautioned on the latter and fined $500 on the former, which is to be paid within two months or serve a one-month prison sentence. 

    For driving without due care and attention and failing to stop at the scene of an accident,  Shashi Isaac of Lime Kiln was fined a total of $500 to be paid in two months or, if in default, he would be required to serve one month at HMP. The offences were committed on August 22, 2012.

    Bath Village resident Zoya Challenger was fined $500 to be paid within four months for driving without due care and attention. The offence was committed on June 8, 2012.

    Kelvon Arthurton of New Road was cautioned but convicted on two counts of stopping to allow passengers to disembark in an area which has not been designated for that purpose. The offences were committed on November 26, 2012 and March 27, 2013 respectively.

    Cecil Rock of College Housing has one month to pay a $500 fine which was imposed on him as punishment for committing an October 18, 2011 offence of driving without due care and attention.

    Lodge Village resident Elroy Henry was fined $200 for driving without a seatbelt. The offence was committed on October 1, 2012 and he has 14 days to pay the fine. Should he fail to do so, he would be required to spend like time in prison.

    For driving without due care and attention, failing to produce his driver’s licence and failing to produce his insurance documents, Devon Simon of Conaree was cautioned on the latter two and was fined $500 on the former. He has five months to pay the sum or serve a one-month imprisonment.
