BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A Guyanese national, who goes by the moniker ‘Chocolate’ and had represented the island of Nevis, won the Dancehall Queen Competition staged Saturday night (May 25) during DJ Flames’ Gemini Bash at Ma Pau on Port Zante.
The event, which ended in the wee hours yesterday, saw Chocolate scoring 369 points to beat Miss St. Kitts and Miss Dominica into second and third places with 309 and 189 points respectively.
She was awarded a trophy, EC$1000 and a voucher, while the other contestants each got a participation trophy, EC$150 and a voucher.
Popular DJ Sweet Sister Sensia chaired the contest and one of the judged criteria which she announced was “ability to stay with the beat”.
It was revealed during the contest that each competitor chose their own music to which they performed.
For the revelation of the placements, Sweet Sister Sensia interacted with members of the audience who shouted the names of the contestants just as judges had them scored.
The loud screams and cheers from the audience proved that Chocolate deserved to win and that the judges had made the right choice.
For the dancing competition, Chocolate had emerged onstage wearing a tomboyish casual outfit of a pants and T-shirt which she topped with a bright green wig.
However, while moving about before doing any major dance move, she quickly removed her ‘shell’ clothing and unveiled a white-fitted top, exposing her midriff and bright green leggings with design slashes at the front, which sent the audience wild with excitement.
A high dancing stage that had been positioned on Mau Pau’s stage had to be physically dragged off by members of the audience, because it was just too wobbly. And such was proven after a voluptuous Miss Dominica had a challenging first go at it while exhibiting her dance moves.
This caused Ma Pau’s low stage to be used instead.
After the competitors had completed their individual appearances, they were together summoned onstage for a freestyle dance segment which brought the contest to an electrifying level as each female danced to take the ‘best of the three’ spotlight.
Speaking with Chocolate, she informed SKNVibes that she has been dancing since age nine and noted that “I used to have a dance group in primary school”.
She has been residing in Nevis for some two years.
Asked what she likes about dancing, Chocolate said, “For me, dance is like a feeling…if I don’t dance I don’t feel good.”
A host of DJs provided entertainment at the bash including DJ Sugar Bowl, Sweet Sister Sensia, DJ Yardy, Danejah from Jamaica and Turbo Sounds from the BVI.
On the outside verandah of the club, the Nu Vybes Band International, affectionately known as ‘De Sugar Band’, had its fans and music lovers jamming to various blends of musical selections such as its self-penned tunes ‘Know What We Doing’ and ‘Oxygen’.
The band also treated its audience to its rendition of popular tunes like ‘Grenade’ by Bruno Mars and ‘Differentology’ by Bunji Garlin.
