FCO Official says Agriculture should be encouraged on Montserrat

New head of the UK Overseas Territories Department Peter Hayes visited the geothermal drilling site on Wednesday, May 29, 2013 with His Excellency the Governor Adrian Davis and other members of the cabinet and the Montserrat Development Corporation (MDC).

    BRADES, Montserrat (May 30, 2013) – Back yard gardening and larger cultivation projects should be encouraged here, says Head of the Overseas Territories Department Peter Hayes.

     

    Speaking to members of the press corps on Wednesday, following a day-long visit to Montserrat, Hayes who said he is an avid gardener, noted that with the island’s lush vegetation the government should welcome and encourage more to people garden as a way of increasing local agricultural production.

     

    He noted that it was a great way to cut food costs, increase the availability of healthy fruits and vegetables which can help with reduce the numbers of people suffering with Non-Communicable Diseases because of bad eating habits. The remaining crop can be consolidated and sold in the marketplace, he added, and be a source of income.

     

    This was Hayes first visit to Montserrat. He said since taking the new post six months ago, he’s become aware of the island and what is happening, however being able to see it in person gives him a new perspective and a new level of understanding and respect for what the people of Montserrat have endured since the start of volcanic eruptions in 1995.

     

    During his visit, the official met with the Honourable Premier Reuben T. Meade and his cabinet, also members of the opposition, the Montserrat Development Corporation board and was also able to visit the geothermal drilling site in Cork Hill.

     

    The former physicist said that he was very positive about the development plans and felt that both the United Kingdom and Montserrat were partners with a shared vision for the island’s growth and sustainability.

     

    Hayes, visit ended with a reception hosted by His Excellency the Governor Adrian Davis on Wednesday evening with a cross-section of members from the community.
