Basseterre, St. Kitts (June 08, 2005): A comparative display of Basseterre then and now, celebrates the beauty of the Federations main city amidst opposing forces of development and natural disasters.
The collaborative exhibit organised by the UNESCO Small Islands Voice National Commission and the St. Christopher Heritage Society, features photos of Basseterre through the years emphasizing the fact that the capital is still very green.

SIV Display Board Committee Chairperson Kate Orchard, explained that although Basseterre is not as green as it used to be, it has done exceptionally well when compared to other developing cities around the globe. She encourages residents to keep it that way by planting trees.

Ms. Orchard said that SIV and the Heritage Society decided that it would be an excellent idea to host this exhibit showcasing the city in keeping with the World Environment Day theme Green Cities: Plan for the Planet.

The display has been mounted in the archway of the Old Treasury Building on the Bay Road and will remain there for the remainder of the week. It will then be relocated to the UNESCO SIV office in the former education building on Cayon Street.

Apart from historical and present pictures of Basseterre, the exhibit includes information about the impact of development on cities all over the world as well as a speech by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan on World Environment Day observed on June 5.

According to Orchard cities all over the world are increasing in size and population emphasizing the fact that it is wise to observe and learn about  others cities to minimize the negative effects many are experiencing.

The called Celebration of Green Basseterre is open to all interested persons.

For more information about planting a tree please contact the UNESCO SIV National Commission or the St. Christopher Heritage Society.
