Beres Hammond
By: Precious Mills, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – “LOVE is the connection that joins two people together…what a sweet connection. When it's right it will last forever…but if you give it a try and you can't get a vibes, take my advice…If your heart's not in it let it go.”

If you are a fan of one of the most popular Jamaican Reggae entertainers, Beres Hammond, or just a lover of his music, then automatically you know that the above lyrics are from one of his songs called ‘Let It Go’.

Yesterday (June 4), SKNVibes took to the streets of Basseterre to find out from members of the public who is their favourite overseas-based artistes returning to St. Kitts for this year’s Music Festival

The other overseas artistes, who are not new to the St. Kitts Music Festival’s stage, slated to perform on the upcoming 17th annual production are Konshens, Tessanne Chin, Shaggy, Super Blue, Bunji Garlin and Fay-Ann Lyons.

From a field of 11 individuals with whom this media house spoke, nine of them preferred Beres Hammond.

Yes, I guess many of you are not surprised that Beres Hammond was the top chosen artiste and some of you might even be wondering why he did not get a 100 percent pick.

Beres Hammond has performed twice on the St. Kitts Music Festival line-up since its inception in 1996.

His debut performance was in 1999 and, since then, local promoters have been regularly bringing him to the Federation. In fact, many citizens and residents on both islands claimed that St. Kitts and Nevis is like his second home.

Interestingly, nationals and residents are always ready to welcome Beres Hammond. And even after his last performance on the Music Festival’s stage in 2009, the hype and excitement around this artiste has not changed.

Some of the individuals who chatted with SKNVibes included teenagers, persons in their twenties and even a female primary school teacher in her late 40s.

On the one hand, since the unveiling of this year’s line-up, many people claimed that there are too many repeated acts. But on the other, there are many individuals who are very excited about seeing some of these entertainers returning, while a few of them are glad to see some of these artistes for the first time after missing out on prior performances.

Konshens’ first performance was in 2011 while Shaggy’s was in 2003 and he returned in 2006. Tessanne Chin will be returning after her debut performance in 2007, Bunji Garlin and his wife Fay-Ann Lyons in 2010 and Super Blue first performed here in 1997.

Listed below are the responses to “who is your favourite artiste returning for this year’s St. Kitts Music Festival”?

    Celles (Female) - Age: 37
“Beres Hammond, because that’s my baby! He got the conscious music boy. He just knows how set de mood right!”

Jamie (Female) - Age: Early 30s
“Bunji Garlin. He has that kind of energy that would bring out people. I hear he was really good the last time he was here, so I’m looking forward to seeing him perform this year.”

    Shawn Richards (Politician) Age: 40
“Beres. I think overall he is a good performer not only with singing but he knows how to get the crowd involved. He has a good variety of music that old and young people can appreciate.”

    Anonymous (Female) - Age: 34
“Beres is my favourite artiste and I could relate to almost everything he sings. Most of his songs is my life story…have to put all together.”

    Taisha (Female) - Age: 18
“Beres. Just the vibes he brings and so. He has a good entertaining personality to entertain the crowd. You can feel his presence which allows you to enjoy yourself.”

    Akousa (Female) - Age: 16
“Konshens. His performance was good when he came here.”

Big Beres Hammond fan (Female) - Age: 24
“Beres. He has smooth lyrics. He puts feelings into his songs and you could feel what he says and relate to it day to day.”

Justin Rogers (Male) - Age: 29
“Beres Hammond…always a favourite performer. Those classic Reggae, Lovers Rock, Old School down to earth straight to the point, and with Lionel Richie that’s a plus because   people who grew up  listening to him know that his music is timeless. Anyone who says that they ain’t all that, forget it because they don’t know it’s old school music until they hear the music. If it wasn’t for them (Beres Hammond and Lionel Richie), we wouldn’t have the type of music that we have today.”

Primary School Principal (Female) - Age: Late 40s
“I am not a Music Festival type of person but I like Beres Hammond. I am not that old but I also like Lionel Richie and, hopefully, I would be there on the two different nights to see them both perform.”
