BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, June 5th 2013 (CUOPM) – Nearly 16,000 households on St. Kitts saved over three quarters of a million dollars in April as a result of government’s continued efforts to subsidize the cost of electricity.
During Monday’s routine Cabinet Meeting, Deputy Prime Minister, the Hon. Dr. Earl Asim Martin, presented a full analysis of the cost savings to electricity consumers brought about by his Ministry’s policy to assist domestic users.
Minister of Information, Sen. the Hon. Nigel Carty said that Dr. Martin in his report outlined that total savings for 15,890 household consumers for the month of April stood at EC$765,576, for an average consumer saving of $48.19 per household.
“Dr. Martin’s analysis revealed that the average household in St. Kitts benefited from a reduction of the fuel charge by 20 cents per KWh. Further, Deputy Prime Minister Martin also reported, that in the government’s efforts to deliver more assistance to those who need the most help and to reward energy conservation at the same time, consumers who burnt less the 201 KWh of electricity, in addition to a reduction by 20 cents per KWh in the fuel charge, received a 30 cents reduction in their current charge, for an overall saving of 50 cents per KWh,” Mr. Carty said.
He said the Cabinet of Ministers lauded Dr. Martin “for his untiring efforts to reduce the cost of electricity against the backdrop of the very high cost of imported fuel.”
Mr. Carty said Prime Minister the Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil Douglas assessed that the significant relief provided for local consumers of electricity will greatly assist families most in need and help them maintain and improve their standard of living.
Deputy Prime Minister Martin was very strongly of the view that while the government must help consumers meet the unavoidably high cost of electricity, consumers must continue to explore alternatives to reduce electricity consumption for even greater and sustained benefit.
