Snake found in De Village

By: Jenise Ferlance, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - ONCE again an unexpected slithering creature was found in St. Kitts.

Sometime last week, a snake was discovered in Lime Kiln, De Village by a young man named Miguel Rogers.

Speaking with this media house today (June 10), Rogers said that he saw the snake sometime between 8:00 and 9:00 p.m. while walking down a road in Lime Kiln on a visit to his girlfriend.

He said the creature appeared as though it was crossing the road.

"From the time I saw it I was like 'me arm, me ain’t know they have these up these sides', because I know they have snakes here...I know people have them as pets. But to actually see one coming out (in the road) like that...it was kind of shocking to me," he explained.

Rogers said it was most shocking to see a snake in an area where many people live.

He went on to explain that after seeing snake, he made an attempt to hold it.

"I looked at it and wondered if I could grab it, but then I wondered if it was one of those poisonous snakes. I tried to hold it but its head was so small it pulled back from my fingers and snapped at my hand. I had a long sleeve shirt so it caught my shirt. I jumped back, found a piece of board an hit it. I guess it hit it a little too hard because I could have seen the skin had torn a little from the neck."

He said the snake died shortly after.

Rogers said he walked down the road with the snake and many persons ran towards him to view it and take photos.

The snake, which he described as thin and about two to three feet in length, was brown in colour with orange-like spots.

Rogers said he had left the snake at his girlfriends' residence.

He however indicated that if the remains were not discarded, he would suggest it be taken to the Agriculture Department for analysis.

This is not the first time a snake had been discovered in recent times.

On May 2, 2012, officers of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force had found a snake at approximately 6:50 p.m. while on patrol in the Frigate Bay area.

Reportedly, the snake, yellowish brown in colour and approximately five feet in length, was struck by the vehicle in which the officers were patrolling and died shortly after.

It was taken to the Basseterre Police Station and transferred in veterinary care services for analysis, where it was said that the reptile was “nothing to be scared of” as it was “not a poisonous snake”.

The usual questions when creatures such as these are found are once again being raised - “Where did they originate? How did they get here? And are there any more of such creatures on the island?”

It makes one wants to pay closer attention to what is in one's pathway.
