BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – EXECUTIVE Director of the Culturama Secretariat, Abonaty Liburd has disclosed that there is an increase in registered participants of the festival which is approaching its 39th annual production, slated to take place from July 25 to August 6.
Speaking with SKNVibes, Liburd highlighted the “increased interest” of individuals having registered to take part in the festivity.
He stated that, to date, 22 individuals have registered for the Senior Calypso Monarch Competition.
He remarked that such a high number for that particular competition is something that “we have not had here for a long time”.
Additionally, the number of registrants for the Junior Calypso Competition is 14, which is just two numbers shy of its maximum count.
As it relates to the Cultural Street Parade, various communities, villages and schools are expected to participate and, like the Senior Calypso Monarch Competition, there is increased participation registration.
To date, eight primary schools have registered and some 250 students are expected to participate in the Parade which has ‘Nevis Nice’ as its theme.
The three sections of the Parade will be Agriculture, Flora and Sea.
Asked what he believes is the reason for the increase in registration, Liburd said, “I think people are looking forward to the 40th Anniversary and so they are using the 39th as a hype or stepping stone.”
He opined that some people are “jumping on board so that they can get a hype” for next year’s well-anticipated celebration.
Last Friday (June 7) saw the launch of some Culturama contestants for the Miss Culture, Miss Culture Swimwear, Miss Teen Nevis, Mr. Kool and the inaugural Mr. and Miss Talented Youth.
Liburd was pleased with the impressive scores of onlookers who attended the event.
For him that was the “largest launch” to date.
“A number of people turned out to witness the massive, massive launch,” he remarked.
Culturama will be celebrated under the theme: ‘History! Culture! Music! Combined! Culturama 39!’
