More than $5 000 in fines to be collected by Court

    BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE Basseterre Traffic Court was buzzing with activity late last week with approximately one dozen individuals appearing before His Honour Ronald Benjamin, and more than $5 000 in fines being imposed on them by the Court.

     

    King Street resident Craig Mills – for driving when not the holder of a driver’s licence, driving without insurance, driving an unlicensed vehicle and driving without due care and attention – was fined $300 on each count. The sums are to be paid within four months or he would be required to serve one month at Her Majesty’s Prison.

    Mills was also disqualified from obtaining a driver’s licence for one year.

    Leighton Ephraim of Central Fiennes Avenue pleaded guilty to driving without due care and attention, driving without a driver’s licence, driving an unlicensed vehicle and driving without insurance. On the first count, he was cautioned and on the following two was fined a total of $800 on each count. On the latter, he was fined $500 and was also disqualified from obtaining a driver’s licence for one month. The offences were committed on January 12, 2013.

    Bird Rock resident Tricia Warner was fined $400 for a September 29, 2012 offence of driving without die care and attention. She has seven days within which to pay the fine or a 14-day custodial sentence would be imposed.

    Calvin Taylor of New Pond Site has seven days in which to pay a $250-fine which was imposed on him by the Court for committing a March 18, 2013 offence of driving without due care and attention.

    Ramon Palmer pleaded guilty to driving without due care and attention and driving an unlicensed vehicle and was fined $300 to be paid within 14 days or, in default, serve 14 days in prison.

    Lower Monkey Hill resident Austin Claxton was fined $500 to be paid in one month or serve a default penalty of one month behind bars. The fine was imposed after he admitted to committing an October 31, 2012 offence of driving without due care and attention.

    For obstructing the free flow of traffic on March 25, 2013, Keisha Williams of Lodge Village was issued a $100 fine to be paid within seven days.

    Edward Ryan of Upper Fiennes Avenue has one month of pay $600 which he was ordered by the Court to pay as punishment for committing a January 1, 2013 offence of driving without due care and attention.

    Saddlers Villager Allister Hazel told the Court that he committed two traffic offences on December 1, 2012; one for driving without due care and attention and the other for driving without insurance. He was fined a total of $800 and his driver’s licence was suspended for four months, which commenced on June 6, 2013.

    Shenouda Newman of West Farm was ordered to pay a total of $400 forthwith for two incidences of driving while not wearing a seatbelt. They were committed on September 6, 2012 and August 16, 2012.

    Stone Fort Estate resident Oscar Grant was charged with driving without due care and attention and leaving the scene of an accident, both of which were committed on December 23, 2012. Having pleaded guilty to both, he was cautioned on the formed and on the latter he was fined $200 to be paid within seven days.

    Lloyd Somersall of Mattingley – for committing a January 20, 2013 offence of driving without due care and attention – was ordered by the Court to pay $400 within four months. His Honour Benjamin attached a secondary custodial sentence which is to be imposed if Somersall fails to pay the sum within the stipulated period.
