BRADES, Montserrat (June 11, 2013) – The Honourable Premier Reuben Meade is in London to meet with Prime Minister David Cameron ahead of the G8 Summit on tax transparency matters.
Montserrat was the first overseas territory to agree to the Multilateral Convention on Mutual Assistance in Tax Matters.
Cameron is pushing for all overseas territories and dependencies to commit to automatic tax information exchange on both a bilateral and multilateral basis. He is also wants to see the walls broken down around company secrecy, urging the creation of fully resourced registries agencies “that are freely available to law enforcement and tax collectors, and contain full and accurate details on the true ownership and control of every company.”
In May, the prime minister extended an invitation to the leaders in Montserrat, Bermuda, the British Virgin Islands, the Cayman Islands, Gibraltar, Anguilla, the Turks and Caicos Islands, Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man to join in him London to show support for his goal of setting a global standard in tax transparency.
Premier Meade is also expected during his visit to meet with officials from the Department for International Development (DFID) to provide an update on current projects.
