Press Release

Havana, Jun 7th, 2013  (Prensa Latina) President Raul Castro met in this capital with former Zambia's President Kenneth Kaunda, who is on an official visit to this country, national media reported today.

During the meeting, both leaders evoked milestones of the Cuban-African historical relations, particularly between Zambia and Cuba, and expressed their interest in strengthening bilateral ties.

Kaunda, who is considered one of the founding fathers of the independence of the African continent, held meeting with other authorities of the Caribbean country, and was awarded by the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples with the Solidarity Order.

At a meeting with Cuban Parliament President Esteban Lazo, the visitor said "what Cuba has done for supporting us, against imperialism and colonialism, is something we value very much."

The 89-year-old former statesman said the new African leaders are ready to join and continue the struggle of the predecesors to defeat the common enemy to mankind, such as hunger, ignorance, and crime, among others.

Kaunda became the first president of Zambia in October 1964, and remained in power until 1991.
