Press Release

BRADES, Montserrat (June 12, 2013) – Vulnerable residents in the community will be receiving radios from the Disaster Management Coordination Agency (DMCA) to assist with disaster preparedness.

During the monthly meeting of the Montserrat Disabled Persons Association (MDPA) on Tuesday June 11, 2013, the members were given a lesson in how to use one of the early warning tools, the ViaRadio, from Information and Outreach Officer Anne Thomas of the DMCA.

A ViaRadio was presented to Warden Miss Buffonge and it was announced that twelve more radios will be strategically distributed amongst the residents at the Lookout Supported Warden Assisted homes later this week.

The ViaRadio is a compact unit with many features to include ability to: access any available FM radio station; radio interrupt for messages to be relayed from the Disaster Management Coordination Agency (DMCA); and allows Radio Montserrat or any other emergency support organization to relay an approved message. The unit is also equipped with a siren and can receive scrolling text messaging on its display screen. Both of these features can assist residents to access alerts and other important information as part of their preparedness strategy.

Thomas explained that the radios are programmed to automatically tune in to Radio Montserrat, and have rechargeable batteries.

The DMCA will continue to work with the Community Services Department to identify other vulnerable residents who will benefit from the assignment of a radio.
