BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE Challengers community was plunged into a state of mourning this afternoon (June 19) after one of its residents was gunned down in cold blood.
A large crowd was gathered in the Stone Fort Heights area after news of the demise of one of their own had spread through the village and the Federation.
The deceased was identified as Clement ‘Hump’ Greene of Stone Fort Heights.
The incident occurred sometime after 1:00 p.m. at his shop - which sits in the same yard as his residence.
Details about the incident remain sketchy but unconfirmed reports suggest that while the shopkeeper was at his business, he was approached by an individual(s) who made an attempt to rob him and fatally shot him in the process.
He was found dead lying on the shop's floor.
Members of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force are currently making investigations into the incident and the Public Relations Officer of that organisation, Inspector Lyndon David, told SKNVibes that a press release concerning the incident would be disseminated shortly.
Parliamentary Representative for the area the Hon. Glenn ‘Ghost’ Phillip, who lives two streets from the place where the incident occurred, visited the crime scene and spoke with this publication concerning the loss.
Phillip explained that he has known the deceased for his entire life and described him as a close friend who was always willing to give to those in need.
“I was in Cabinet and I received a call indicating that there was a shooting in Challengers. So, quite naturally, I made a call and I found out that it was my neighbour and friend, and it happened at a place that I visit daily. As a matter of fact, I usually stop here at mornings to buy bread.
“It is very devastating at this point in time knowing the nature of the individual and what he has done for ordinary persons who live across here. I could attest to a lot of acts of kindness that he has provided for persons in the community, whether it is providing persons with provisions for free or whatever it is…”
Phillip recalled that he last spent an extended period of time with Greene and friends at the shop on Monday evening and last saw him yesterday.
“On Monday night he was his old jovial self; so it is really devastating not just for this community but for myself personally.”
