BASSETERRE St. Kitts, June 20th, 2013 -- As Nelson Mandella said. “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” We all realize that our global society has many flaws that we wish we could change. The only way to do that is by educating our young people and giving them the tools that they will need to one day make that change on our behalf!
The Immaculate Conception Catholic School held it’s biennial Grand Auction & Dinner at the Marriott on June 8, 2013, with the goal of raising funds to enhance the learning experience for its students, to give them the tools they will need to change the world! In attendance were over 250 people made up of members of the Catholic School Board, ICCS Administration & Staff, parents, students and members of the local community. The evening was hosted by the dynamic duo of Naeemah Hazelle-Menon who served as Hostess and Max Brisbane who was the Auctioneer.
The outpouring of support leading up to this Auction was unprecedented! The St. Kitts Marriott Resort gave its support to the event along with Sunlinc who provided the décor for the evening. There were over 100 local businesses that gave assistance through the donation of goods and services. In addition several overseas companies donated as well: Air Canada, British Airways, LIAT, and TDE Tours Connections.
The evening started with a welcome drink as guests were escorted into the colorfully decorated Ballroom by ICCS staff and students. Guests were then introduced to the Silent Auction where there were 120 amazing items up for bid. Items included; jewelry, electronics, artwork, travel packages, dining out and adventure, and many other fantastic prizes. During the Silent Auction a buffet dinner was served. After dinner the Oral Auction commenced with 9 amazing prizes up for bid.
These items were comprised of:
• An original Kate Spencer painting, “Evening at the Races”
• An original Barbara Kassab painting, “Rainforest River”
• 2 tickets on British Airways
• 2 tickets on Air Canada
• A weekend at the Four Seasons
• Dinner for 4 with Chris Gayle at Carambola
• A signed West Indies Team Cricket Bat
• The ICCS Driveway Naming Opportunity
• A cruise for 2 from Miami to the Bahamas aboard the Carnival Imagination
Aside from the multitude of items that made up the Silent and Oral Auction, there were also wonderful door prizes. ICCS student volunteers spent the evening selling chances in our raffle and Dessert Dash. Guests had the opportunity to purchase raffles chances to win one of seven amazing prizes. They were also able to try their luck at winning one of six delicious cakes prepared by the Marriott Pastry Chef in our Dessert Dash.
Thanks must be given to National Bank and the Caribbean Credit Card Corporation for their assistance with the processing of credit cards during the auction. In addition, appreciation must be given to Harper’s Office Depot for their assistance with the layout and design of our tickets and programs. A giant thank you is also extended to members of the ICCS staff, the dynamic finance committee and the members of the student body that volunteered to assist on the evening of the Auction to ensure that all ran smoothly.
Sincere thanks are also given to the Auction Organizing Committee comprised of Krista James (chairperson), Mona Bacchus, Rodney Browne, Shobha Chandiramani, Glenna Evelyn, Val Henry, Lester Ible, Sandy Kelsick, Giselle Matthews, Belinda Pantlitz, Claire Rawson, Devena Reid and Daislyn Sharpe. This committee comprised of alumni, staff, and parents of ICCS rallied together to solicit the multitude of items that were up for auction, market the event, and plan all of the fine details that went into making the evening an overwhelming success!
Heartfelt thanks are extended to all who assisted with and supported this event.
As Margaret Mead said, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”
