64% traffic convictions due to driving without due care and attenti

    BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – MORE than 60 percent of the individuals convicted at the Basseterre Traffic Court over the past two weeks were found guilty of driving without due care and attention and close to $6 000 have to be paid in fines.

     

    The 14 individuals appeared before His Honour Reynold Benjamin at the Sir Lee Llewellyn Moore Judicial and Legal Services Complex on June 13 and June 20.

    Derek Boon of Old Road – for a September 21, 2012 offence of driving without due care and attention – was convicted and fined $300 to be paid within one month or, in default, serve a 14-day term of imprisonment.

    Bird Rock resident Kimberly Ghouski – who was also charged with driving without due care and attention – was convicted and fined $600. The sum has to be paid within one month or she would have to serve one month at Her Majesty’s Prison (HMP). The offence was committed on March 8, 2013.

    West Farm’s Elizabeth Vacendak – for driving without due care and attention and for failing to stop at the scene of an accident - was fined a total of $500; $400 for the first count – which is to be paid within one month or serve one month behind bars - and $100 for the second, which is to be paid within seven days or serve seven days. 

    The offences were committed on April 18, 2013.

    For driving an unlicensed vehicle, St. Johnston Village resident Elvis Thomas was cautioned for driving without insurance. He was fined $250 to be paid within 14 days.

    Kelly Ellis of Old Road was fined $750, having committed an October 27, 2012 offence of driving without due care and attention.

    Shadwell’s Cecil Rock – charged with due care and attention, failure to produce his driver’s licence and failure to produce proof of insurance, committed on March 18, 2013, was cautioned on all charges.

    Samuel Stevens of Molineux – for collecting passengers in an area not designated for that activity – was fined $100 to be paid within seven days. A 14-day custodial sentence would be imposed if he fails to follow the orders of the Court.

    For failing to obey a traffic sign, failing to obey the lawful direction of a police officer and for obstruction, Morvel Fahie of Lodge Village was convicted and cautioned. The offences were committed on November 30, 2012.

    Glenroy Pringle of Molineux was convicted for driving without the appropriate driver’s licence, driving without insurance and driving without due care and attention. He was fined a total of $1 450 to be paid within one month or a one-month custodial sentence would be imposed.

    The offences were committed on January 20, 2013.

    For failing to produce his driver’s licence and proof of insurance, Keys Villager Anthony Francis was fined $100 on the first count and cautioned on the latter.

    Sana Usman of Frigate Bay was ordered by the Court to pay $400 for a June 14, 2013 offence of driving without due care and attention. She was also cautioned for failing to stop at the scene of an accident.

    A $300 fine was handed down to Trevon James of Challengers Village for a March 5, 2013 incident of driving without due care and attention. He has six weeks to pay the fine or spend 14 days at HMP.

    Cardin Avenue resident James Webbe has a $400 fine to pay, having been convicted by the Court of an April 27, 2013 offence of driving without due care and attention.

    Ian Stevens of Gillard Meadows also has a $400 fine to pay for a driving without due care and attention offence. His offence was committed on February 14, 2013 and he has one month to pay the fine or face the imposition of a 14-day custodial sentence.
