“Please Leave Nothing But Footprints” Says Rotary Club of Liamuiga

By: (RCL), Press Release

South Friars Bay, St. Kitts – As the sun rose on a clear Saturday morning, so did members of the Rotary Club of Liamuiga (RCL) as they journeyed to South Friars Bay for the Club’s first coastal cleanup event. Partnering with the RCL were members of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB) Staff Association.

Shortly after 6 a.m., mini groups began canvassing the entire coastal area along the one mile stretch of beach. The groups searched between rocks, combed the sandy shoreline and scoured under sea grape trees. In the end, over 25 large 30-gallon garbage bags were filled with trash and other debris (galvanize, wooden pallets, etc.) were gathered.

“The Rotary Club of Liamuiga recognizes that the preservation of our marine/coastal environment is essential to our country’s future. Debris, if not removed, can be harmful and even fatal to all manner of marine wildlife, can damage our economy and can even become a human health hazard,” said Mr. Lester Hanley, RCL President.

“As we continue to commemorate a ‘Decade of Service to Our Communities’, our Club was happy to collaborate with the ECCB Staff Association to take care of our fragile marine environment, show community support for our shared natural resources and have fun all at the same time,” President Hanley concluded.

RCL extends sincerest thanks to the ECCB Staff Association for its partnership in service, Warner’s One Stop for sponsoring the newly mounted beach sign to discourage dumping and the Parks & Beaches Unit for facilitating the removal of the collected trash.

RCL encourages all users of our nation’s beaches to “Help Keep Our Beaches Clean” and “Please Leave Nothing But Footprints.”
