BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - RAMS Village Superstars have moved to the top of Digicel Premier League table despite only earning a draw in their game against Harris Paint St. Peters at the Gardens Playfield in McKnight.
Coming off a morale boosting game over defending champions Delphic Newtown, RAMS Village Superstars set out on Saturday (Jun. 22) to grab a crucial three-point that would have seen them move to the top of the Standings.
However, St. Peters had other ideas after they took a shock lead in the first half following a defensive error by Village. But within a matter of seconds, the former champions struck back to pull the scores level before the second half.
The second half provided very little chances; however, Village got the ball into the back of the nets but the goal was disallowed due to an offside call, which did not sit well with supporters of the club.
The game ended 1-1, giving both teams a point.
The following day saw a bottom of the table clash between St. Thomas/Trinity Strikers and Cayon FC.
Very few scoring opportunities were created in the game. The only goal came midway in the first half, amidst some degree of uncertainty, when a shot from St. Thomas/Trinity’s striker was intercepted by one of Cayon’s defenders.
The ball was said to have crossed the goal line when the defender had stopped it, but the Assistant Referee ruled it a legitimate goal.
The second half failed to provide a spark with little to no chances being created and ended 1-nil in favour of St. Thomas/Trinity Strikers.
The second game on that day was probably the most anticipated one of the weekend, which featured rivals Delphic Newtown United and Hobson Enterprise Garden Hotspurs.
The game lived up to the billing with both teams trading blows.
The first goal however came in the second half when a free kick just outside the 18-yard box was converted by Ian ‘Rumpy’ Lake of Newtown.
The young Spurs team however displayed the fighting spirit they are known to possess and, in a late run, tapped in an equaliser, which caused dozens of their fans and supporters to invade the field in wild celebration.
Just when spectators had envisaged a drawn match, Spurs struck again and denied Newtown the opportunity of regaining their position at the top of the Standings.
A second straight loss to Newtown means they now fall behind Village in the table but only on goal difference.
