June 25th, 2013 -- Windsor University School of Medicine (WUSOM) and the United States Embassy Barbados is hosting an International Legal-Medical conference for St- Kitts-Nevis Federation and the CARICOM community next week, June 24-28, Monday thru Friday, at the WUSOM Brighton's Estate, Cayon, St. Kitts, W.I. campus. The conference is being held in the Dr. Denzel Douglas campus auditorium from 8 am to 4 pm the entire week.
The SANE SAFE TRAINING HELPING CRIME VICTIMS conference is the first ever of its kind in the Caribbean. The curricula is focused on helping women, men and children who are victims of crimes. Statistically, 1 out of 4 women in the Caribbean are victims of sexual assault before the age of 18; one out of 6 men are victims of sexual assault before age 18. The program provides nursing forensic medical training and 40 CEU continuing education units to nurses and nursing students.
This program is for members of law enforcement, judges, attorneys, prosecutors, first responders, Doctors,--trauma, emergency, OBGYN-- Nurses, Emergency Medical personnel, counselors that deal with victims of crime.
"This is very rare and important opportunity for the legal and medical community to come together. This training is an equivalent value of over $3,000 USD per person....or around $9,000 EC. It is important for employers to allow their employees to take advantage of these rare and unique free training opportunities....an entire week is a big time commitment....but you are helping the community." said Dean Brijjinder Gupta, Dean of Academics.
Windsor University School of Medicine has become known as "THE GO TO PLACE" for Forensic Medicine in the Caribbean. Windsor has developed a Forensic Medicine elective for its Basic Science's program and is offering a Masters in Forensic Medicine Program by the end of the year. This is a unique program which will be taught half on-line and half at the Windsor University campus.
The United States Embassy, Bridgetown, Barbados has partnered with the Royal St. Kitts/Nevis Police Department and the Windsor University School of Medicine. This is one of the first such training classes ever offered in the Caribbean.

Dr. Patricia Speck Ph.D. of the University of Tennessee, School of Nursing, an International Icon in forensic nursing will team with her assistant, Ms. Diana Faugno, MSN, to present the week long excursion on how the medical professional assists criminal investigations through medical forensics. Together, the guest speakers bring over 70 years experience in CSI medical forensics training to St. Kitts.
In addition, Copper Chimney restaurant of Frigate Bay is graciously providing free lunch, drinks and snacks for the attendees.
