BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – WITH the St. Kitts-Nevis Football Association’s Congress scheduled to get underway on Sunday (Jun. 30), four notable figures have signalled their intention to vie for the position of President.

The four individuals are former President of the Association Peter Jenkins, Franklyn Maitland of Village Superstars, Alexis Nisbett and Anthony Johnson, the incumbent President.

On Monday (Jun. 24), Johnson launched his Re-election Campaign with a slate of 10 candidates at Stonewall on Prince’s Street, Basseterre.

His launch provided a five-minute slide of what he and his Executives had achieved during their first term in office.

The entire team was introduced with each highlighting their intent to further develop the sport, and called for the representatives of the various clubs in attendance for support while expressing confidence in winning a second successive term.

Corneal Williams, one of Johnson’s team members who is vying for an executive position stated, “A vote for us is a vote in the right direction.”

Another candidate, Dominic Stevens, proclaimed, “When it is nice you have to do it twice.”

Candidate for the Second Vice President position, Alastair Edward claimed that their team is “here to work hard to push St. Kitts and Nevis forward as a nation”.

In a passionate address, the incumbent President reflected on the successes his team achieved during it five-year tenure and noted what it intends to do in charting the way forward if given a second opportunity.

Johnson made mention of an impasse he inherited with the league with a debt of $300 000 owed for Goal Project 1 due to a cost overrun, and an overall debt of $10 000 as well as a FIFA ranking of 163.

He added that his team had set out to repair the impasse, settle the debt and improve the ranking.

Johnson stated that they were successful in fixing those issues and, as a result, were able to receive funding for Goal Project 2 and achieved the Federation’s best ever FIFA ranking.

He proclaimed that they focused on creating opportunities for young footballers and as a result has provided scholarship opportunities for six young players.

Johnson also boasted of offering the most courses in the region over the last three years with eight coming in 2012.
