BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – ASSISTANT COMMISSIONER OF POLICE (ACP) Ian Queeley is dismissing rumours that the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force was involved in the shooting death of Adrian ‘Mac 1’ Springette.
The 22-year-old of Cedar Trees, Grove Village, Nevis was killed early Saturday morning (Jun. 22) at the Elquemedo Willett Park (formerly known as Grove Park) in Charlestown.
Initial investigation had revealed that he died at the scene and five young males were in custody assisting police with their investigation.
Since then, nothing was heard about the young men, but rumours started spreading on the island that the police were involved in Springette’s death.
However, a release from the police today (Jun. 27) stated that Queeley is informing the general public that there is no truth to the statements being made.
“The general public is hereby informed that the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force had no operation taking place in the area at that time or were there any police officer pursuing anyone, in particular the deceased, before, during or after the fateful incident on Saturday 22 June 2013 at Grove Park,” the release read.
It further stated that Queeley, the ACP with responsibility for Crime, is kindly asking those members of the general public who are responsible for making the statements to refrain from doing so.
“Such derogatory rumours,” it added, “can only bring doubts on the Police Force towards the general public which may discourage the citizens from cooperating and assisting the police with their main initiative of taking back the streets and bringing justice to grieving family members.”
The police have reiterated that anyone who has any information relating to the incident is asked to call the Violent Crimes Unit at 469-5392, Ext. 27 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-8477, and that the information would be confidential and the person who provides it might be entitled to a reward.
