18 complete Motorcycle Operation Training

By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – EIGHTEEN members of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force (RSCNPF) today (Jul. 3) completed three days of training geared towards sharpening their skills as motorcyclists while strengthening the Force’s capacity to improve upon road safety.

The 17 men and one woman who are attached to various Departments across the length and breadth of the RSCNPF, began their training on Monday (Jul. 1) at the Police Training Complex under the tutelage of SGT Steve Fortier of the Orange County Sherriff Department in Florida.

Commandant of the Training Complex, Superintendent Lionel Moore attested to the fact that when the officers first began they were obviously nervous and some were neophytes, but the 15-minute demonstration they delivered prior to the Closing Ceremony proved that they were well on their way to becoming expert motorcyclists.

Some of the areas of training included motorcycle safety, how to properly mount and dismount the vehicle, and carrying out regular checks to ensure that none of the parts of the vehicles is loose.

The 15-minute demonstration saw the officers performing a number of 360-degree exercises as well as skilful bobbing and weaving between strategically-placed cones, as a true test of their skills of manoeuvring.

SGT Fortier expressed that because the participants were eager to learn, the course progressed rapidly. He commended them for their transition from being ‘stiff’ to more relaxed and more experienced individuals.

Deputy Commissioner of Police and Director of Training Stafford Liburd made a special appeal to the officers to use their training as a tool in the enforcement of the Federation’s laws.

“I appeal to you Officers who have received this training to enforce our traffic laws but to do so with professionalism. Do so with pride and understanding that you are playing a significant role in keeping our roads safe for motorists and pedestrians.”

SKNVibes understands that of the 16 motorcycles which were donated by a US citizen to the RSCNPF, 12 would remain in St. Kitts and the remainder would be for the use of the police officers in Nevis.

Also, the motorcycles will be used by outriders during visits to the Federation by dignitaries.

This publication also understands that a Motorcycle Patrol Unit is also in the making as an additional arm of the RSCNPF.
