BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – LEADER of the People’s Action Movement (PAM) and Parliamentary Representative for St. Christopher Five the Hon. Shawn K. Richards informed that he has filed another Motion of No Confidence in the Government of St. Christopher and Nevis.
Richards officially made the announcement today (Jul. 4) during a national address he made via Sugar City FM 90.3.
In his address, Richards spoke of the political and other difficulties which – according to him – are as a direct result of the actions or lack thereof of the Political Leader of the land, the Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil. L. Douglas.
Richards explained that at 1:55 p.m. yesterday he filed the second Motion of No Confidence. He also stated that the six Parliamentarians, who indicated that they have no confidence in PM Douglas, have instructed their lawyers to withdraw the ongoing court matter surrounding the first Motion of No Confidence from the hands of the judiciary.
He said their lawyers are in the process of filing and serving the necessary papers to give effect to their clients’ instructions.
The PAM Leader reminded that the excuse touted by the Prime Minister and others for not tabling the MONC is that it was “sub judice”, that it was before the Court and therefore could not be debated.
With this first MONC being removed from the Court and with the filing of a second, Richards declared that the Prime Minister now has “no excuse” to “keep stalling” the tabling of the motion.
Some of the matters which the new MONC subsumes are the Prime Minister’s constant and wilful disregard for the Constitution of St. Christopher and Nevis, failure to consult with the country about the Land for Debt Swap, refusal to effect reduction in the electricity rate within St. Kitts, the mismanagement of the affairs of St. Kitts and Nevis, and the display of unruly Parliamentary and extra-parliamentary behaviour by the Prime Minister.
The first Motion of No Confidence was filed by Leader of Her Majesty’s Loyal Opposition on December 11, 2012, and since them the Opposition members have been agitating for it to be tabled and had resorted to seeking redress with the Court.
Following his address, Richards told this media house that he hopes this MONC could be tabled before the Federal Parliament on Monday (Jul. 8).
