BASSETERRE St. Kitts, July 5th, 2013 -- Members of the public are invited to pay tribute to Sir C.A. Paul Southwell on July 18th, 2013, as his family and friends join hands in his honour, in a service planned for what would have been his 100th birthday at the Wesley Methodist Church, from 8am.
The Southwell family will join with former colleagues of the National Hero, to celebrate their father’s service to the local community and to officially launch a week-long event that celebrates his life. The event is the brain child of son, Rustum Southwell, who currently resides in Nova Scotia.
“This idea was originally designed to bring the surviving members of our family together to commemorate the amazing legacy our father has left us,” Rustum said, “but it has quickly mushroomed into something that others have expressed an interest in sharing, particularly through sponsorship, which confirms to us the goodwill which still exists as a result of our father’s service.”
Clytie Southwell, who chairs the organising committee for the Church Service says although her father rarely attended church, he held regular Sunday morning prayer meetings with the family, in the living room of their Fortlands home.
“I recall Daddy passing various books around the room from which each of us would read,” says Southwell, “including the Bible, but other works founded on spirituality and religion as well.”
During the tribute, presentations are to be made by Messrs. Willie Dore and Stanley Franks, among others, both of whom worked closely with Paul Southwell during his tenure in political office.
Paul Southwell was baptised as a Catholic and later converted to the Methodist faith. At the time of his death, a private service at Wesley Methodist Church preceded his official funeral at St. Georges Anglican Church, on May 29th, 1979.
A Luncheon at Carambola and a Golf Tournament, are also included on the event itinerary, on July 18th and 20th, respectively.
