Basseterre, St. Kitts, July 04, 2013 (SKNIS): The June 1 to 3 motorcycle training course for the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force was described as significant as it marked a number of firsts for the 52 year-old agency.
“These (motorcycles) will be on the road 24/7,” said Police Inspector Carl Caines, Head of the Traffic Department, as he outlined plans to establish a Motorcycle Patrol Unit in St. Kitts and Nevis. “The objective is to really get the police on the road so we can be more visible so that we can … curb the cell phone [use while driving] offences, the parking offences, the speeding offences because the public has been crying out.”
Inspector Caines was one of the 18 male officers assigned to various stations from Basseterre to Old Road to Dieppe Bay in St. Kitts as well as Charlestown to Gingerland in Nevis who were trained in advanced techniques of motorcycle operation. However, Coretta Mills a 13-year career Traffic Warden stood out as she was the only participant who was not a police officer but more importantly, she was also the only woman who signed up for the three-day course.
“It means a whole lot because it shows that when you are in an organization you can do whatever challenges are set before you,” she said.
Police Constable Rudwell Mickle attached to the Frigate Bay Police Station, learnt about the course while in the guard room at Police Headquarters. He volunteered right away and does not regret that decision.
“It was very interesting, very informative and we all learnt a lot and we’ll do our best as we go back to the community.”
Inspector Caines had a few words of advice for the public.
“I would like to advise the public to be good law abiding citizens,” the Head of the Traffic Department stated. “If you are good law abiding citizens you have nothing to worry about, but for those who are not law abiding citizens we ask you to desist from the practices that you are involved in because the police will be there and if you’re caught you will be ticketed, you will be fined or you may be taken before the court as the case may be.”
