BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – CHAIRMAN of the People’s Labour Party (PLP), Douglas Wattley declared that “Lindsay is our symbol” while speaking at a rally held yesterday afternoon (Jul. 5) in response to the arrest of former People’s Action Movement Leader Lindsay Grant.
Grant was arrested while taking part in a protest march organised by the Unity movement.
“Arwe nar tek it! You see they ain’t know….they just declared war on de people. They so stupid…every movement always need a symbol and today Lindsay is our symbol because Lindsay has taken a lock up for all of us.”
Wattley opined that the possibility exists that the situation could deteriorate into violence.
“I want you to understand that a lot of us are probably going to get hurt. Some of us might even die but we nar tek it. And so I suggest to Asim, I suggest to Douglas, I suggest to all of dem who are inclined to want to stay in power by any means necessary, we are determined to take them out of power by any means necessary”.
“I want to say to you men that we cannot let up. This is just the start! We know that it is going to get messy. I got to be honest with you, it is going to get messy! Mmessy because there is absolutely no way that all of us could sit back and be trampled on by an illegal Prime Minister,” he added.
Wattley continued: “Ladies and gentlemen, don’t be disheartened. You have to have some stamina because this is just the beginning, because even though Douglas is a coward he still going to try something.”
According to the PLP’s Chairman, “reason why I say we nar tek it is because there is no way absolutely in this world we going tek no last lick”.
Wattley explained to the crowd about how “deep unity goes” whilst revealing that he and Grant are first cousins.
“I am the Chairperson of the PLP but I must vote for Eugene Hamilton in the People’s Action Movement. You follow that? Here this…that you didn’t know. Lindsay Grant is my first cousin. Lindsay’s father and my father are brothers. You didn’t know that. You see how deep the roots go? You see why unity is the only way we could make it forward”?
He alleged that an order was given to pull Grant from the march.
“And that is why I say we nar tek it, because I understand, you know, that a certain policeman gave the order to pull Lindsay over the barrier and lock him up and that is why I say look at the policemen and mark dey face, because they shouldn’t be pulling out guns on us because of no illegal Prime Minister. No policeman is supposed to pull no guns on us. They shouldn’t block us from going down no street. We have been patient and now you going pull guns on us? Now you going incite us by pulling one of the leaders and locking him up! I personally believe you done start something that you ain’t know how it going end!”
Wattley alleged that Prime Minister Douglas figured that he would “use security forces to try to suppress us. What he going do, suppress us for the next hundred years”? he questioned.
