PAM prepares to protest tomorrow

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – REPRESENTATIVES of the People’s Action Movement (PAM) have indicated their intention of continuing protest action tomorrow (Jul. 8) against several things, including the delay of the tabling of the Motion of No Confidence.

Hundreds protested on Friday (Jul. 5) through the streets of Basseterre which deteriorated into a standoff between police officers clad in riot gear and the protestors.

As another consequence of the protest, former Leader of the PAM Lindsay F. Grant was arrested by police and charged with obstruction.

PAM’s Deputy Leader Jonel Powell – while speaking with this publication – expressed that the protests would center on the government’s resolve to proceed with Parliamentary business before dealing with either of the two Motions of No Confidence that have been filed with the Clerk of the National Assembly.

“The protests would certainly continue tomorrow. We are protesting against what we consider to be an illegitimate and illegal government led by a minority of representatives in the House and proceeding to have the House of Assembly to deal with matters other than the Vote of No Confidence. We expect that the government would do the right thing and have those motions made priority and not just come into Parliament to what you want and disobey the Constitution.”

Powell said the protests would continue until the Motion(s) are debated.

Meanwhile, the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force will be putting measures in place to prohibit unlawful assembly of individuals in the vicinity of Government Headquarters.
