BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – POLITICAL divide was at its peak today (Jul. 8) outside Government Headquarters, where supporters of the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party, People’s Action Movement and the People’s Labour Party displayed placards bearing messages of “Full Confidence” and “No Confidence”.
The placard-bearing groups were there in support of their respective political parties and their elected and selected Members of Parliament, who were in attendance at today’s Sitting of the National Assembly.
Though all supporters were restrained from standing in front of Government Headquarters, the Opposition’s supporters however stormed towards the building from which the Opposition Members emerged after staging a walk-out from Parliament, citing the absence of the Motion of No Confidence on the Order Paper.
The Opposition members were greeted with cheers from their supporters while the pro-government supporters taunted them, singing, “Throw dem out ah de party, throw dem out” and chanting “Ah hog dey be...dem ah hog”.
As the Opposition Members mingled with their supporters, they were hugged and complimented for the stance they took in the House.
As both crowds started to swell, members of the security forces called for reinforcement to report to the area in an effort to avoid any confusion from taking place.
On arrival of reinforcement, the officers were successful in getting the Opposition’s supporters to retreat across Princes’ Street, while the Government supporters stood just above Central Street beyond the barriers that were manned by the security forces.
The Opposition’s supporters subsequently moved to Liverpool Row from where they stood, for the most part, in silence.
The silence was however broken with unsavoury remarks by the supporters when a consultant to the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis, Charles Jong, was seen approaching that area, probably to get something from his vehicle that was parked in within that vicinity.
